OFFICER HONORED AT MID-ATLANTIC REGION TRAINING CONFERENCE

Reisterstown, MD – LtCol Richard W. Baldwin, USAF-Aux, was recently honored at the United States Air Force Auxiliary’s Mid-Atlantic Region Training Conference held at Camp Fretterd Military Base in Reisterstown, Maryland this past week.  LtCol Baldwin was presented with two (2) awards at the conference.

The first award presented to LtCol Baldwin was the “Colonel Lester E. Hopper Officer of Year Award.”  The award was presented by Colonel Elizabeth Sydow to LtCol Baldwin for his contributions in historical research and history preservation for Virginia Wing.  The Presenter, Col Sydow, served as the Commander for Virginia Wing between 2020 and 2023.  She currently serves as the National Liaison to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well as the National Response Coordination Center (NRCC).

The second award presented to LtCol Baldwin was the Gill Robb Wilson Award, the highest award that can be attained for professional development within the United States Air Force Auxiliary.

It recognizes officers who have dedicated themselves to leadership, integrity, and personal development over the course of their career.  The award was presented by Col Jack Ozer, former Region Commander of the Northeast

Region of the United States.

A former squadron commander of Virginia Wing, LtCol Baldwin now serves as Virginia Wing’s History Preservation Officer as well as the Operations Officer for Virginia Wing’s Legislative Squadron working closely with state legislators of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

He had previously received the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award as well as two (2) Commander’s Commendations for his work in historical research and preservation.

In accepting both awards, LtCol Baldwin credited his success due to the love and support of his wife, Kim, as well as his lifelong friend LtCol Michael Girardi for supporting him and encouraging him over the years.  He also gave credit to his late mother, Kathy, who passed away on April 15, 2023.  “My mother played a key role in shaping my future.  She was a strong and loving no-nonsense mother with a backbone who always believed in me.  I miss her dearly.” Baldwin said.

The United States Air Force Auxiliary performs approximately 90 percent of all continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the U.S. Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) located at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida.  Additional responsibilities include performing homeland security, disaster relief, and counter drug operations in conjunction with federal, state and local agencies.

The purpose of the United States Air Force Auxiliary is to search for and find the

lost, provide comfort in times of disaster, and work to keep the homeland safe.

The officers of the United States Air Force Auxiliary selflessly devote their time, energy, and expertise toward the well-being of their communities while also promoting the importance of aviation and helping shape future leaders through its cadet program.  Today’s officers perform their duties with vigilance and maintain their commitment to the safety and well-being

of nearly 1,500 communities nationwide.
